SOCIAL STUDIES ARTICLE 3

QUESTIONS:

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT SOCIAL STUDIES?

FIRST STUDENT INTERVIEW:

Likes learning about the history, especially of how Canada came to be because:

- Explains where we come from

- Background of Canada's land

SECOND STUDENT INTERVIEW:

Likes class discussions since it is interesting to see other people's opinions on certain topics and their individual reasoning behind it. Explains that it is more interesting than reading from a textbook.

THIRD STUDENT INTERVIEW:

Likes Social Studies because of their teacher who is less focused on getting work done and more so on their student's engagement in the subject.

WHY DO YOU THINK SOCIAL STUDIES IS USEFUL?

Explains how past events formed and connects to how the world works today. It is interesting to see certain past events are related to ongoing happenings now.

- Helps appreciate how people and society functions

- Able to see the world more as a whole using the past rather than a small piece from today

Learning about history and past mistakes and failures help guide future generations to make better choices.

HOW DOES SOCIAL STUDIES HELP IN YOUR LIFE?

Having the ability to understand what is fair and unfair in the world helps with judgment and paying more attention to current events.

Brings more awareness and attention to different perspectives and cultures. It mainly helps with understanding certain people's perspective on the world and why.

Did not affect much in general life since many of the mistakes created in the past is hard for an average person in the modern world to replicate.

HOW DO YOU THINK SOCIAL STUDIES COULD IMPROVE?

Very note-heavy and would prefer it if hands-on activities were considered. Not much issues in terms of the subject itself.

Subject is very focused on the past, but would prefer it there were more frequent talk orientated around the present day.

Would prefer if more topics could be applied to the real-world and present day events.

WHAT IS SOMETHING CHALLENGING IN SOCIAL STUDIES?

Easy to mix-up dates and names since there is a large amount to remember, and there is not an easy way memorize them.

Writing long answers to deceptively simple, or close ended questions, since it is difficult to extend an answer if you have already written a response.

Reflecting all of the learning and taking the advice to apply it to real world situations.
