FRENCH ARTICLE 2

INFORMATION ABOUT THE COURSE CONTENT/GRADING

Grade 8 course content focuses itself more on the letters of the alphabet, and basic pronunciation on the different accents letters in French have that aren't typically present in the English language. General grammar and vocabulary such as gender and number for nouns and determiners and endings to specific words (ex. le, la, un, une) and such as learning how to communicate likes, dislikes, friendships, family, the weather (but only simple terms) and parts of the body are also taught as a part of the curriculum, but its common for a student to have already learned this years prior.

Conjugations for irregular verbs (such as être and avoir, and sometimes aller) are taught though a student should already be familiar with how an irregular verb is constructed. With regular verbs being being words that end with -er and nothing else until they get to the higher levels.

Students are also expected to learn about basic Francophone culture and communities- and assigned to complete a presentation about Francophone countries.

GRADE 8 COURSE CONTENT OUTLINE

Grade 9 course content cover more on core communication skills, with reading and listening exercises being a substantial part of the curriculum. Students are also taught pronominal verbs and when to use auxiliaries in a sentence or not. Also more advanced question constructions- as opposed to last year- such as being able to identify a formal or casual question.

Most of what is taught in Grade 8 prepares you for Grade 9, which is just a more advanced version. Learning also includes cultural topics, and a wider representation of the French speaking world as it encourages students to explore songs, short films and literature, as well as teaching practice on phonics, expanding vocabulary knowledge and getting a better understanding on key grammar.

French News Page - Gr. 11/12 Course Content

At Palmer, French 11 and French 12 are often taught as a joint class. At this level, students are working independently most of the time and will get to explore opportunities on their own. That being said, students will always have someone to seek support from. Prerequisites include French 10, or you could be referred to a higher level by a teacher who is well aware of your abilities.

French 11/12 is an advanced course, which means students are already past the fundamentals. Students are expected to already know basic self-introduction, conversations, writing, and reading. Being a grammar-heavy course, students will continue to hone their French language skills like pronouns, repositions, tenses, and more, by engaging in group discussions, either with peers or natives. Students are asked to consume immersive media, such as movies, songs, and stories, so that they are fully exposed to French culture.

Major projects include script-writing, which students will eventually put into a skit. Students will act out stories and scenes, like a marketing presentation. Students will have opportunities to use the things taught in class. One that really stands out is going to a French restaurant. The class will have to communicate, order, and express themselves entirely in French. Other assignments might be analyzing songs by looking into the lyrics, rhythm, and tune.
